Factotum is a “search assistant” for Safari. It opens a small window next to your active Safari window and loads a search page in it. So far, that’s nothing you couldn’t do by yourself. The unique feature of Factotum is that when you click an offsite link in the little search window, the link opens in your main window—not the search window.
To open Factotum’s window, just click the Factotum button on Safari’s toolbar. If you select some text in the current window first, Factotum will immediately perform a search on that text in your default search engine. If not, it will open your default search engine’s home page.
ADC Search is an extension for Safari that lets you search directly on the Apple Developer website.
When searching in Google for Apple framework keywords, results from the ADC (Apple Developer Central) website are usually buried.This extension provides search results directly from the ADC website.
You can reach to the result pages of 36 web services directly. But I’m so sorry, these are in Japanese only. When you search a YouTube video with this extension, YouTube replaces as a top item automatically and immediately. You can use the keyboard shortcut keys(following) to show or hide goSearchForYou. And you can show or hide it with an item “goSearchForYou” of context menu.
When you push Return key or Enter key with the direction keys “UP”, the result page opens in a new tab.
Google Instant Shortcut Keys is an extension for Safari that has two purposes:
- Access Google Instant by keyboard shortcut (⌘J). Use extension settings to set default behavior to either current or new tab. Adding shift to the combo (⇧⌘J) elicits the opposite behavior.
- Access search results with keyboard shortcuts. Every search result on Google Instant is assigned a keyboard shortcut. For instance, to go to the first result use: ⌃1 (ctrl-1).
PopSearch puts all your favorite search engines a keystroke away.
No matter what web page you’re looking at, just press the configurable hotkey (the default is Command-K) and up pops the PopSearch search box. Type your search terms, select a search engine in the menu, press Enter, and PopSearch takes you straight to your search results.
PopSearch comes with a few predefined search engines, but it’s easy to add your own. Just click the Settings button in the search popup.
If you select some text in Safari before pressing the PopSearch hotkey, that text will be automatically entered into the Search box. PopSearch also remembers the last search engine you used and selects it for you the next time.
PopSearch even does site-specific searches. To search just the site you’re currently viewing, select “Google Here” or “Bing Here”. You can define your own site-specific search engines, too.
Clever.
DuckDuckGo Tips for Safari
As at least one reader of Safari Extensions noted, while DuckDuckGo is a brilliant search engine, its design leaves something to be desired. Happily, its creator applied a special class (.yui-skin-sam) to the <body> element of the results pages that makes it easy to style that page using Safari’s custom style sheet feature—or potentially an extension, if someone out there is feeling ambitious. If you like the way the screenshot above looks, add these lines to your Safari style sheet (or download this file—right-click it and select “Download linked file”—then put it somewhere safe and select it under Safari—>Preferences—>Advanced—>Style Sheet):
.yui-skin-sam #rpr
{border: none !important;}
.yui-skin-sam #sxw
{border: 1px solid #BEBEBE !important;}
.yui-skin-sam a
{color: #7E7E7E !important;}
If you don’t like the colours in the screenshot above, this CSS snippet can at least provide a helpful guide for changing the default red border on zero-click info, the red border on the search box, and the clashing red and blue links, respectively.
Additionally, if you like the idea of an easy, keyboard-activated way to search DuckDuckGo, but a toolbar extension is too much, this bookmarklet may be up your alley. Put it first in your bookmarks bar, and you can launch it with ⌘-1; put it second, and you can launch it with ⌘-2, and so on.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled extensions.
KeySearch adds a new way of searching the internet to Safari. It uses short keywords to allow you to search any site you want, right from the toolbar. While browsing the web, just press Control-S or click the toolbar button to bring up the KeySearch bar. Then just type a keyword followed by your search query.
Want to see videos of cute kittens? Type youtube cute kittens
Forgotten who directed Star Trek? Type imdb Star Trek 2009
Need directions for a trip? Type map New York to LA
KeySearch comes with plenty of ready-made keywords, and it’s really easy to add your own.
My only wish for this extension would be an option to use ⌘-K to search.
