Safari Extensions

Answer Post
Hey,

How about a topic where non-programmers can suggest new ideas for extensions or new extensions they would like to see implemented ? I, for one, would love to see an extension that customizes Safari's green button, so that Safari maximizes to full-screen, instead of maximizing to contents.

This blog is dedicated to posting extensions that developers have already created out of curiosity and the pure goodness of their hearts. So far every single Safari extension I’ve seen has been made available for free—many of them even provide easy access to the source code. While it’s easy to start feeling entitled to free stuff, keep in mind that many of these developers write software for a living. That means that time spent writing awesome free stuff is time not spent writing awesome stuff that actually pays their bills.

It’s also important to remember that there are a lot of things official extensions can’t do. Apple’s API provides the ability to add a toolbar button, add a toolbar, add a contextual menu item, and inject scripts into webpages. It doesn’t give access to OS X’s window manager, so messing with window buttons isn’t possible with official extensions.

If you desperately want a certain extension, I encourage you to do one of two things. First, create a request forum yourself; if there are developers out there looking for a non-paying project to spend their time on, they’ll find you.

Second, grab a free Safari Developer Program account, hit the free W3Schools for a crash course in HTML5, and start working up your own awesome extensions. I’ll be happy to post ‘em here!
